Aquatic Therapy Exercises

  1. Squats: Do squats similar to the ones you would on land, and work the muscles in your legs, front, back, and glutes.
  2. Kickboard push/pull: Push and pull a kickboard back and forth to give your core muscles (back muscles and abs) a workout. Your arms get some work, too.
  3. Step-ups: These are like basic step-ups, only in water. You step up and back down using the pool stairs, and work both legs.
  4. Lateral leg raises: This exercise targets the hip muscles that contribute to walking, stability, and strength. Swing your leg in and out laterally, and switch sides.
  5. Rear leg raises: You face forward with your hands flat outside the pool and raise your back leg. Do one side at a time or alternate to go left, right, left, right, etc.
  6. Forward leg raises: Stand in the pool and raise one leg at a time. Don’t hold onto anything for support unless you need to.
  7. Diagonal leg swings: These are similar to lateral leg raises except you swing your legs diagonally and rotate your foot a small bit. Diagonal leg swings parallel real-world hip movement more than lateral, leg, and forward leg raises do.
