Tips to Preventing Injuries and Pain During the School Year
School doesn’t have to be a pain in the back or neck. There are some things you can do to prevent injuries and pain.
Proper Use of a Backpack
A backpack is a great tool for carrying all of your supplies, but it can also cause issues if it isn’t worn or used properly. Below are tips for how to use your backpack properly to prevent injury:
- Use both straps and adjust them so the backpack fits snugly against the back. The backpack should not rest on the butt, but should instead rest in the middle of the back.
- Don’t overload your backpack. Overloaded backpacks can cause problems with posture and increase fall risk.
- Make sure the straps are snug but not so tight they are cutting into your shoulders or under your arms.
Proper Posture
Using proper posture can help prevent or alleviate back and neck pain. Pay attention to your posture while walking, standing, sitting or reading. Some tips on proper posture include making sure you are sitting with your back straight, feet planted flatly on the floor, shoulders back, head up over the top part of the neck, and the neck up over the top part of the shoulders.
Sport Injuries
Back to school also means back to sports such as football, basketball, and wrestling to name a few. Proper warm-ups and proper use of safety equipment can help prevent sports injuries.
