Dry Needling

Dry needling is a technique for the treatment of muscle trigger points, pain and muscle tightness.

What is a Dry Needling?

Dry needling is not acupuncture, a practice based on traditional Chinese medicine and performed by acupuncturists. Dry needling is a part of modern Western medicine principles, and supported by scientific research.
Dry needling involves a very thin solid bore needle that penetrates the skin and stimulates underlying myofascial trigger points and muscular and connective tissues. The needle allows a Dr. Cohen to target tissues not functioning properly, are tight or hurt. Dr. Cohen uses single-use, sterile needles after cleaning the area with 70% alcohol.

What is a Trigger Point?

A trigger point is a small, Pea-sized lump or taut band of muscle located within a larger muscle group. Trigger points can be tender to the touch, and touching a trigger point may cause pain to be referred to other parts of the body.

Benefits of Dry Needling

We use dry needling with the goal of relaxing tight muscles, inactivating muscle trigger points, relieving pain or improving flexibility and range of motion. Medical research demonstrates that dry needling reduces pain and muscle tension, and normalizes muscle dysfunctions. This can help speed up the patient’s rehabilitation and return to an active life.
